Having studied Hickok and been associated with his, in my opinion, best biographer Joseph G. Rosa for many decades I hope my review is helpful. In the last few years several books have been published on the life and times of James Butler “Wild Bill”Hickok and almost all have been a rehash of previous mixtures of fact and old fictions.
Again, in my opinion, Mr. Crease’s biography is just about the best writing since Joseph G. Rosa’s “They Called Him Wild Bill”, published 1974. Unique to this work are a good number of new supported facts regarding Hickok’s movements, relationships and personal life. As with all historians there may be issues that perhaps I may differ from the author, but most are trifling.
Well written, researched and presented. This work is recommended and deserves a place on the bookshelf of any frontier buff.
